Why are all the cool people buying “organic”?

This is like a new phenomenon, all of a sudden websites, blogs and magazines are filled with articles and notes on buying organic fruits and veggies. So I decided to do a ton of research on this and find out what the real deal is!

Here are 2 highlights:

  • Some nasty chemicals are sprayed on them, it’s gross and it kills the nutrients
  • Our bodies now have to combat these chemicals what we are voluntarily ingesting, to say is bluntly we are poisoning ourselves (nice, right?)

Doesn’t sound so bad really when you think about all the other stuff we feed ourselves- all those chemicals that we like to call fat-free i.e. I can’t believe it’s not butter (me either, because it’s not!) It also costs a lot more to buy organic produce- sometimes a lot more!

Well I am on my quest for clean and healthy so I decided I would join in on the craze but only on certain things that I believe from reading would have the greater amount of toxins- namely anything with thin skin that can’t block it out. I am always updating this and it doesn’t mean I would refuse to eat a blueberry but I am trying!

Here is my list:

Organic:

Blueberries

Strawberries

Raspberries

Blackberries

Red Peppers

Asparagus

Green Beans

Non-Organic:

Bananas

Watermelon

Apples

Avocados

I recently started a garden in the backyard and we have planted many of these so I am hoping that if my crops continue to grow I will be able to avoid the markets all together!

It also helps that my son thinks this whole thing is wonderful and fun 🙂

Clean Eating

For those of you who are new to this, it is remarkable what you learn when you start to read about nutrition. I started eating clean because it made me feel good, also I am lucky enough that my family equally enjoys to eat lots of fruits and vegetables which makes it a lot easier!

When I started my research I was blown away by the chemicals and products that are used in processed foods. And I am not saying that I don’t enjoy some cake every now and then but I limit it to special occasions or cheat days. I recently started to read a book by Tosca Reno called the Eat-Clean Diet Recharged. What I am learning is that you need to eat frequently to keep your metabolism in peak condition, I am also eating lots of lean protein and fiber to help me feel full and satisfied during the day.

Here is a sample of my daily diet so you can see what I mean:

Breakfast:

1/2 cup plain oatmeal with one scoop of protein powder

1/4 cup berries (any kind)

2 hardboiled eggs

Snack:

Apple

2 tbsp of Almond or Peanut Butter

SPARK DRINK

Lunch:

Lean Meat (Chicken mostly)

2 servings of veggies- and I always have asparagus for one serving

1 6oz plain non-fat yogurt

Snack:

Carrot and Celery Slices

Laughing Cow cheese wedge (Garden Veggie) or Lite Ranch Dressing

SPARK DRINK

Dinner:

I am not the cook so I eat whatever is cooked for me lol but I limit my portion size and always have vegetables.

I drink 3 liters of water a day, and I sneak in a Green Tea somewhere during the day. I really limit coffee and alcohol consumption too but I am not ready to give either of them up! I really recommend that you enjoy what you are eating, research recipes and try new things. It’s not always about giving things up completely just eating them in moderation.

I started slowly and now eating this way is easy and I love how I feel so it’s not hard to stick to!
